Working Professionals Consider an Online Doctoral Degree

Studies show that only one in one hundred people have earned a Ph. D. level degree, but with the increasingly popularity of internet-based education, that could change soon. Online doctoral degrees may be the answer you've been searching for.

There are several different types of online doctorate programs available. With the number of new programs that offer online doctoral degrees, students now have more choices and options than ever before when deciding on which specialty they would like to pursue. However, in correlation with the different variations and many types of online doctoral degrees, students must still complete other requirements like residency, field work, and clinical experience. All of this may be done before graduation, and sometimes even after graduation, but generally before you can get your professional license to practice, the requirements must be completed.

Some of the areas of study most often chosen by students are business, engineering, public health, education, and psychology. Other than medicine and law, these five areas make up the substantial core of all online doctoral degree curriculums. Adults from many diverse backgrounds often enter wildly varying programs that are different from the areas of their undergraduate work. Many employers see this as an advantage simply because they believe that it creates a well rounded individual who has experience and knowledge in several areas.

Many people who may be considering whether or not to pursue their online doctoral degree might not realize that there is also a substantial mentoring aspect to any doctoral program. Mentoring provided by faculty members is important in terms of obtaining any doctoral degree, particularly those offered online. Teachers who instruct courses and eventually take part in a person's final examination committee will most likely also write letters of recommendation for that person in the future, and the mentoring process can help with all aspects. More often than not, students earn a fair level of prestige simply by being associated with their mentors.

One other issue that students often do not consider is that additional licenses and certifications are often required in order to begin practicing their professions after they have earned their online doctoral degrees. Specific courses of study and individual industries will not allow graduates with online doctoral degrees to begin working until all other requirements have been fulfilled. Usually, students see these requirements as technicalities, and they can often be taken care of in a relatively short time frame; however, it is to every student's benefit to find out exactly what those requirements are and how to complete them soon after finally earning their online doctoral degree.

Because an online doctoral degree is highly sought after by students, it is also highly prized by employers. That could mean increased job prospects upon graduation.
