Put Some of Your Life Experience Toward Earning College Credit

For many people, college transcripts do not always reflect or show life experience. If a person has earned a considerable amount of knowledge and been through experiences applicable to work and other situations, they usually do not end up with a diploma to show potential employers. However, when these people are earning their online degrees, they may be able to put some of their life experience toward earning an actual credit or credits.

For example, if you learned Mandarin Chinese while living in China or worked with businesses in specific situations like mergers and acquisitions or other transactions, you may be able to get college credit for those life experiences. Instead of having to sit at a desk in a classroom and listen to lectures on subjects you've already mastered and dealt with in the real world, many online degrees now make it possible to earn life experience credit so that you can forego certain courses.

There are three primary steps to follow if you'd like to get life experience credit as you pursue your online degree. The first step is to locate online degrees that actually life experience credit options. Most programs will have sections on their sites that detail the life experience credit options available to potential students. As you look into this possibility, you will also want to make sure that the school is an accredited college or university. Remember, not all online courses and programs will accept your life experience so make sure you check before you decide to enroll.

The second step is to simply call, email, or write that school's guidance counselor or advisor in order to get information on how to apply for these life experience credits. Many institutions make it a requirement for students to turn in an application and a portfolio of their work. Meeting with school officials, providing references and passing an equivalency test may also be required in order for you to earn your life experience credit. Online degree programs are very valuable, but so is your time and applying to get the life experience credit is always well worth the effort.

The third step is actually to build or create your portfolio when the school requests it. You will need as much proof and evidence of your life experience in order to get the credits you deserve. Items such as any industry certifications and awards, resumes, certificates, business cards, job descriptions and business references should always be included into any portfolio.

Many people may not have earned their online degrees yet, however with life experience credit, they may be able to finally apply their learned skills and knowledge toward graduation.
