Collaborative Healthcare Education ModelThere is a commonly held belief that a collaborative healthcare education model would benefit patients, families, doctors, nurses, and nearly every human being on the planet. In fact, collaboration is usually claimed to be both an educational model and practical one that will be used in the future. Many professionals in the healthcare field have already stated that the current medical model is not superior, and that those doctors and nurses who embrace a collaborative healthcare education and practice model will always be at the forefront of health care practice. However, even with all of these seemingly affirmative praises for collaborative healthcare, many doctors and nurses continue to work separately, and in a fashion directly opposite of anything remotely considered collaborative. Many people, students and doctors understand that groups are stronger than individuals, and the collective knowledge shared among several people is much more powerful than any amount individually. In order to change the current medical system, a collaborative healthcare education model must be successfully implemented so that students who are pursuing their medical degrees can bring about the needed change. Unfortunately, there are deep obstacles to creating a truly collaborative healthcare education model. The main obstacle is the current healthcare practice model. Workers in the healthcare industry can work together for many years or even decades and not obtain a clear understanding of the people they are work with. Differences in understanding, perceptions, and education are some of the many reasons why collaboration is difficult between workers. The creation of a truly collaborative healthcare education model is also difficult for many working healthcare professionals simply because they generally do not know or understand the experience and education workers in other disciplines may possess. This lack of known and shared knowledge is one of the contributing factors to collaborative healthcare education and practice models. Fortunately, there are some areas which are making forward progress. There are a few online schools that enable residents to collaborate with the students and other non-physicians early in their education. In fact, after residents have been exposed to a collaborative healthcare education model during their online courses, they make adjustments and move toward a more collaborative healthcare practice model. Many online students do not initially understand the benefits to a collaborative healthcare education model but later come to realize the advantages of such a system. Although it seems obvious that the whole is more powerful than the individual, professionals in the healthcare industry seem to disagree in practice even if they may agree in theory. This disparity between theory and actual healthcare practice is narrowing, but continues to present a big gap between having a collaborative healthcare education model and putting it into actual practice. Online classes dealing with the collaborative healthcare education model may help to overcome the discrepancy.
